How to Fail Better: A Web-based Project on Risk, Failure and Equity in Higher Ed
This project started with a notion of risk taking and failure as somewhat overlooked aspects of current conversations around equity happening across higher education. The idea was something like this: When we (faculty, administrators, support staff, etc.) present students with a rhetoric of failure and risk taking as positive and productive, but we do so within the context and confines of structures — be they institutional or intensely granular, down to the level of one assignment in a single class — in which the ability to suffer or endure the potential consequences of that risk is disproportionately available to some, “failure” and “risk taking” become equity issues. It’s imperfect. It’s epiphanic. But it was enough to think that there is more here worth exploring.
